Prescription of X-Rays/Assessment for Minor Emergencies
Since 2020, physiotherapists certified by the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) have been authorized to prescribe X-rays for their patients. These X-rays are covered by the RAMQ (Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec), ensuring that patients do not face any additional costs at the radiology clinic.
To be eligible, the patient must have experienced a trauma within 72 hours prior to their physiotherapy appointment, and the injury must involve the musculoskeletal system (e.g., arm, leg, spine).
Spinal Decompression Therapy
Spinal decompression therapy is a non-invasive treatment designed to alleviate pressure on compressed areas of the spine. It effectively reduces pain, enhances mobility, and helps restore normal spinal function. This therapy is commonly used to treat conditions such as herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. The primary goal of spinal decompression is to relieve symptoms associated with these conditions, avoiding the need for costly or invasive treatments.
Spinal Decompression Therapy involves the use of a computer-controlled adjustable table that applies a gentle, distracting force along the length of the spine. This force is administered in cycles, with varying pressures and intensities over time, helping to reduce pressure on compressed nerves and discs. The process also increases blood flow, which can reduce inflammation and promote healing in the affected areas.
The benefits of spinal decompression therapy have been supported by clinical studies and anecdotal evidence from patients who have undergone the treatment. Many patients report effective pain relief for specific types of back and neck pain. Additionally, this therapy has been successfully used to treat other conditions, including scoliosis, headaches related to neck issues, and general discomfort caused by muscle spasms or tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
The McKenzie Approach
The McKenzie approach is a specialized physiotherapy method aimed at reducing or relieving pain and numbness in the neck, back, or limbs by identifying the underlying mechanical cause and the movement direction that offers the most relief. This dynamic, active approach empowers the therapist to equip patients with tools that support the healing process.
After an assessment, your physiotherapist will explain your condition and provide guidance on proper postures and movements to avoid. Additionally, they will prescribe specific, progressive strengthening exercises tailored to your needs. This technique is effective for a variety of conditions, including chronic low back pain, herniated discs, sciatica, stiff neck, whiplash, and more.
Orthopedic Manual Therapy
Orthopedic manual therapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy that involves an individualized therapeutic approach to assessing and treating muscles, joints, and nerve tissues. This approach includes detailed evaluations, clinical reasoning, and identifying the root cause of the problem.
This therapy is used to address pain, stiffness, and restricted movement resulting from orthopedic injuries or conditions. It involves a range of hands-on techniques that target the spine, arms, and legs, with each treatment tailored to meet your specific needs.
Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy uses electrical energy to treat conditions like chronic pain, musculoskeletal injuries, muscle wasting, and nerve pain by applying controlled electrical stimulation to targeted areas for healing and symptom relief.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
This type of electrotherapy uses low-voltage electrical currents to relieve pain. Electrodes are placed on the skin near the pain site, delivering electrical impulses that stimulate nerves and block pain signals.
Interferential Current Therapy (IFT)
IFT employs two medium-frequency currents to treat pain and promote healing. Electrodes are applied to the skin, delivering alternating currents that intersect, creating a therapeutic effect within the tissue.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS)
EMS uses electrical impulses to contract muscles, making it a common physical therapy tool for muscle strengthening and rehabilitation. It can also provide pain relief.
Shockwave Therapy
This non-invasive treatment uses high-energy sound waves to promote healing and reduce pain in conditions like plantar fasciitis or tendinitis.
Ultrasound Therapy
Ultrasound therapy utilizes high-frequency sound waves to promote healing and reduce pain. The sound waves penetrate deep into tissues, generating gentle heat that reduces inflammation and improves blood flow. This therapy is commonly used for conditions such as tendinitis and bursitis.
Exercise Prescription
Exercise prescription involves creating customized exercise plans to address individual rehabilitation and health needs. The physiotherapists assess your physical condition and goals to design a targeted exercise regimen that enhances strength, flexibility, and overall function.
Physiotherapy for Sprains, Torticollis, and More
Physiotherapy for sprains, torticollis, and similar conditions focuses on alleviating pain, improving mobility, and supporting recovery. Treatment typically includes a combination of targeted exercises, manual therapy, and other techniques to address the underlying issues and restore function. This approach helps reduce inflammation, enhance flexibility, and strengthen affected areas, promoting overall healing and functional improvement.
